In Autumn 2017 we are taking a team of volunteers from the UK to work directly with Footprints in Zambia for a fortnight. The dates for this are 23rd Sept 2017 through to 8th Oct (although this may vary by a day or so either side due to flight times and availability).
This is an ideal opportunity to get involved with Footprints, see the work we do first hand and make a tangible, personal difference to the lives of Street Children in Lusaka.
Volunteers will be staying with our partners Mission Direct who will be organising all of the logistics for the trip and they will be doing work on the ground which directly impacts street children with Footprints and our Team Hope partners. Suitable for individuals, groups, or families, places on this team will be limited to around 10 people. See How to Apply below for details of how to get involved with the trip or drop us an email to [email protected].
You will be helping the local Footprints Zambia Team with some of the following important outreach activities in the trip:
- Counselling and home tracing street children to help get them off the streets, back to their families or into accommodation at a centre.
- A visit to the Mother Theresa Centre and providing a lunch for the Street Children
- Street Walks to make contact and build up rapport
- Getting involved with reading and literacy classes
- Community outreach in Misisi: supporting individual and family needs
- Assisting with health talks
- Visits to centres (e.g. Vision of Hope) and talking to children who are building a life away from the streets
We also plan to have a day or two of debrief, rest and recuperation in Livingston at the end of the trip immediately before flying back to the UK.
The above itinerary is provisional and will be tailored subject to need on the ground and suitability for the group. We plan to hold an orientation/planning day before the summer and will confirm further details after that and an assessment and planning exercise in June once final numbers are known.
Logistics and Fundraising
All of the logistics for the trip are being organised by our partners Mission Direct, they will be organising the flights, food, accommodation, local transport and their staff team will be providing support on the ground in Lusaka.
The minimum contribution to cover the costs of the trip is £1675 per person. This covers the Mission Direct travel and accommodation costs and is payable to them. This is an opportunity to raise funds and awareness in your local community and we will provide you with tools and tips to help you do this. In addition to the minimum contribution, it will help our work substantially if you are able to raise further funds to help us in the core work that you will be doing in Lusaka. Every pound you raise over and above the minimum contribution will actually be spent in Lusaka: buying local goods and services, paying cost of living stipends to the Footprints Zambia team to allow them to continue their life saving work.
The hold luggage allowance on flights to Lusaka tends to be generous and you may be able to take more than one case/bag often up to 30kg+ in total. In the past volunteers have appealed for donations in kind of clothing, sports equipment, toiletries etc and carried these out to Zambia as part of their luggage allowance. These essentials improve life for the Street Children and, as importantly, form a tangible link between your supporters in the UK and the work that you will be doing. We will provide further information about urgent aid priorities in the run-up to the trip.
How to Apply
This trip is being run as the Mission Direct Zambia 5 trip. Places on the team will be limited to around 10 individuals and are likely to fill up during Spring 2017 so early application is encouraged.
